It’s time to be thinking about bird migration in Maryland. Shore birds and raptors arrived in February, early March. Our wonderful song birds are in peak migration from April thru May and will be looking for nesting sites or travelling further North.
About 75% of North American species of birds migrate in some form (short, intermediate, or long distance).

Here’s how you can help.
- Provide native habitat by offering food, water, and shelter.
- Plant native flowers, shrub, and trees
- Have plenty of clean water sources: fountain, bird bath, plant saucers
- Reduce threats, keep your furry friends indoors. Domesticated cats are still natural hunters.
- Reduce or turn off outdoor lights through mid June. Consider motion detectors. Amber lights are much better than blue. Be sure the radiant light is shining down, not out or up.
- Prevent bird strikes by using decals etc. These must be on the outside of the window.
