Birding Trails of Brunswick

Brunswick is fortunate to have the C&O Canal and the Potomac River as our southern boundary. This precious area is classified as one of Maryland’s Important Bird Areas (IBA), and many of our best birding trails and ehotspots are located along our beautiful C&O Canal and Potomac River. We are home to eight ebird hotspots located at the C&O Canal trails, within our City Park trails, and at the regional Othello Park. Brunswick is located within the Atlantic Flyway so we are treated to birds migrating back and forth along the North and South American continents. Many of these birds are just temporary visitors stocking up on food and a little rest before they continue on their way to their final destination. This is especially evident at the C&O Canal IBA. Even if you can’t identify a single bird, load up the ebird app to your phone and you can use the sound id to help you start learning. You can also help out the scientific community by logging your sight and sound id’s to the ebird site. Ebird is managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and its purpose is to gather, archive, and share information from bird watchers (and listeners) everywhere for scientific use. We are their data gatherers. Believe it or not, the fall migration will be starting soon so get out there on any of our many trails, enjoy the peace, the beauty and sounds of nature, and help out the scientific community by logging your birds.
