Keep Your Bluebirds Happy and Safe

The Eastern Bluebird is a cherished inhabitant of Maryland. During the breeding season the male’s coloring is a vibrant blue and orange. Females have the same coloring but are usually “duller” in color. Bluebirds have incredible eyesight and can spot an insect on the ground from 60 feet away. Their diet consists of beetles, crickets, grasshoppers and their favorite, caterpillars. Bluebirds usually choose cavity nesting sites in trees, often old woodpecker holes. You can assist bluebirds by providing nest boxes. It can be so delightful to watch the pair prepare the nest box and visit it frequently with food once the babies emerge. Please know that if you choose to do so, you have responsibilities to ensure that the birds are safe. Common issues are predators such as other birds, raccoons, snakes, and cats. Visit the North American Bluebird Society to learn more about how to keep your birds safe. Learn about proper nest box size, location sites, placement height, predator guards and access to food and water.
